A World of Theatre for Young Children

Around the world, there is a unique form of theatre known as Theatre for Early Years (TEY)—performances created especially for babies, toddlers, and young children.

TEY is based on the belief that young children are among the most genuine and sensitive audiences. Artists learn from children's responses and create performances that inspire their curiosity, imagination, and sense of wonder.

In Japan, opportunities for preschool children to experience high-quality live theatre are still limited. Tsukuba World Children's Theatre connects with leading TEY companies from around the world to bring inspiring performing arts experiences to young children and their families.

In 2026, following the great success of last year's festival, La Baracca – Testoni Ragazzi will once again travel from Bologna, Italy, to perform in Tsukuba.

In the darkness, everything is quiet.

Then someone turns the switch ON!

A light appears—glowing, dancing, stretching, and transforming.

Look! New shapes begin to emerge.

A flower… a spoon…

Perhaps a mother or a father.

What will it become next?

With simple stage design and outstanding physical performance, this warm, humorous, non-verbal production sparks the imagination of audiences of all ages—from babies to adults.

Perfect for a child's very first theatre experience.

Message of Support

From a global perspective, La Baracca – Testoni Ragazzi of Bologna has long been recognized as one of the pioneering theatre companies dedicated to the development and promotion of Theatre for Early Years (TEY).

Their philosophy of "Children First" is reflected in every aspect of their work. We believe this vision resonates with Article 31 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which affirms every child's right to participate in cultural and artistic life, as well as with Japan's national "Children First" initiative promoted by the Children and Families Agency.

About La Baracca – Testoni Ragazzi

Founded in Bologna, Italy, in 1976, La Baracca – Testoni Ragazzi is one of the world's leading theatre companies dedicated to creating performances for young children.

For nearly 50 years, the company has developed theatre and performing arts primarily for babies, toddlers, and young audiences. Their productions have received numerous prestigious awards, including Grand Prix and Jury Awards at international children's theatre festivals.

La Baracca is also internationally recognized for its research and educational initiatives. The company has collaborated with organizations such as UNESCO and the European Union on projects exploring performing arts for children, earning worldwide recognition for its pioneering work in Theatre for Early Years (TEY).

ON-OFF was developed through research conducted in nursery schools, exploring how young children perceive and respond to light and darkness. The result is a poetic, non-verbal performance that invites even the youngest audiences to discover the world through imagination and play.
